While many spend a lifetime searching for love, Wade Sr. and Vertna Sims are enjoying a lifetime of love. They met at the ages of 7 & 8 yrs old. Mr. Sims and Mrs. Sims’ brother were best friends. When another little boy started to tease Mrs. Sims, Mr. Sims stepped in to defend her and beat him up. Apparently, his chivalry did not go unnoticed. Since that time, the couple has been inseparable.
The Sims were married on December 31, 1948. They relocated to Chicago in 1949. Mr. Wade Sims, Sr. has worked as a factory worker, fisherman, and is currently part owner of a transportation business. Mrs. Vertna Sims has been a devoted homemaker.
They are the proud parents of 15 children, 30 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren. They attribute the success of their relationship to their strong belief in God, knowing their roles and plenty of patience. On New Year’s Eve, they celebrated 63 years of wedded bliss. The family hosts a grand celebration for the couple every 5 years. They are already gearing up for the milestone 65th wedding anniversary.
We salute Mr. and Mrs. Sims for the example of love and commitment that they set for not only the African American Community, but for everyone.
